Wonder Woman opened with $1.6 million on 1,284 screens in the United Kingdom, which exceeded the opening days of  The Wolverine (+30%), Thor (17%) and Captain America (+11%).  The Patty Jenkins-directed adventure earned $1.5m on 1,273 screens in Brazil (including Wednesday previews). Said opening day bested the likes of Thor (+79%), Ant-Man (+42%), Doctor Strange (+37%), Man of Steel (+31%) and Captain America (+11%). It scored $971k in the Philippines, which is the third-biggest opening day ever for Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. behind Batman v Superman and Man of Steel.

It opened okay in Russia, earning $884,000 from 2,406 screens, but that’s still double the opening day results for Thor and Captain America as well as 6% better than Man of Steel. It opened with $$837,000 on 606 screens in Australia and earned another $1.3m in day two in Indonesia ($2.1m cume) and $818k for day two in South Korea ($2m cume). The Gal Gadot superhero movie opens in 17 overseas markets today, including China (yes, thanks to time zone magic today is yesterday) and Mexico.

Potential apples and oranges comparisons notwithstanding, we can note that Suicide Squad had $50 million worldwide heading into the weekend last August and Batman v Superman had $92m worldwide at this same juncture. So Wonder Woman is pacing pretty close last August’s big offering, albeit one that didn’t even play in China. Suicide Squad had $29.1m overseas and $20m in Thursday domestic previews heading into the weekend, while Dawn of Justice had a $21m opening day in China, a $27.7m Thursday preview gross and around $43m elsewhere around the world. But we’ll know a lot more when the Friday domestic numbers roll in tomorrow.
